The EACT Youth Grantees had an intense and unparalleled experience of teaching and closely communicating with Chinese students, of a wide age range(K-12), at diverse school and educational organization settings in China.  For this year's service learning experience, please read the letter written by the "Shanxi, Datong Group".

\July 20, 2012

Dear future youth candidates and people who would be interested in IYF,

We are a group of youth grantees representing the Education Association for China Tomorrow (EACT) currently teaching English in Datong, a city in the Shanxi Province.  Our 4-week program, the International Youth Festival, includes a week-long Global Development Summit in Xi’an and 3 weeks of service learning in various cities.  EACT created this program in response to the 100,000 Strong Initiative.  We are American young adults from diverse regions such as New York, Washington, D.C., Wisconsin, and Ohio.

Our 3-week service learning program includes homestays with local families and students currently studying English.  Every day of the week, we privately tutor our host students and teach classes at the local foreign language school.  The students here are very curious about American culture and the English language.  Every year, our program provides these students with the only opportunity to learn from native English speakers.  We teach children ranging from early elementary to high school students.  In the classroom, we emphasize conversational English, pronunciation, and American culture.

The time we spend in our homestays and classrooms are even more rewarding for us.  We experience firsthand what living in a dynamic and developing city is like.  For many of us, this is our first time traveling to China. What makes this program unique is the opportunity to live with a homestay; it provides us with a family-oriented cultural experience.  We teach alongside Chinese teachers and build very close and valuable relationships with them.

Without this program organized by the EACT, we would not have this unique opportunity to experience China beyond its surface.  We are grateful for your interest and supports, and we hope that we can continue to count on your support of this initiative.  This will provide a life-changing experience for other young Americans!

Best regards,

Jasmine Clark, Washington, D.C.

Vanesa Lauradin, New York, NY

Alice Wei, Madison, WI

Stephen Xu, Cleveland, OH

Tiffany Yu, New York, NY

2-Day Xian Tour and 1-Day Beijing Tour
